A reminder to please check your child's Zippy every evening to ensure you do not miss any important notes or forms that are sent home. If you send any notes to school in the Zippy, please remind your child to give it to me in the morning as when they do their quick check in the morning it can be easily missed! Friday Folders and/ or Poetry will NOT be sent home on Friday without their zippy to prevent it getting lost or damaged. Thank you for your support with this.
Friday Folders:
On Fridays, when there is work to be sent home, your child will bring home a red folder. On the inside there is one side that says "keep at home". Any work that is in this side of the folder should stay at home, it does not need to be returned to school. On the other side it says "sign and return". I ask that you review any work that is in this side of the folder with your child, sign it to show you have seen it, and please return it to school- inside the folder. It is very important that word is returned back to me as I keep it in a separate work portfolio at school, which I will send home at the end of the year.
Poem of the Week:
We started our "Poem of the Week" program last week and it will now start coming home on Fridays. There will be a new poem each week and an activity that your child should have completed in the time given at school that is connected to the poem. I believe that poetry really helps with the development of oral communication, reading, writing and building confidence in reading. Please allow your child to practice reading the poem to you or another family member each weekend and ensure the BLACK poetry duo tang is returned each Monday (or Tuesday if Monday is a Holiday or PA Day). If the work in the poetry duo tang is incomplete, please finish it together on the weekend.
Home Reading:
Home reading comes home on Mondays and should be returned on FRIDAYS. The expectation is that the book sent home is read MULTIPLE times throughout the week (spending about 10-15 minutes per evening). The goal is that home reading will help develop and strengthen your child's reading and comprehension strategies. The reading response is an extension of the home reading program, if your child is able to complete a reading response one night after reading the book, this will only help them continue to practise skills learning in class. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask.
Words of the Week:
To help with the development of reading and writing, we will be starting "words of the week". Each week (usually), there will be a bank of words that are both connected to the poem of the week and beneficial for the development of spelling strategies. Words will be posted on twitter each week so you are aware and can support your child. These words will move to our "word wall" at the end of each week so students can refer to them for spelling in their own Writing Activities. It is also important for them to know "sight words" as these words don't necessarily follow a rule or pattern. We will also be working on these in class as well.

WHAT ARE WE WORKING ON?
Math:
We are working on Measurement! In this unit, we learn about length, area, capacity, temperature and time.
In math we still have to cover:
-Money (coin identification and adding coins to 50 cents)
-Probability
-Subtraction (continued)
It's always good to review everything we have covered since September as well :)
-patterning
-counting to 100 (by 1, 2 ,5 ,10)
-addition
-data management
-geometry (2D and 3D shapes)
-number representation
Language:
We are focusing on the basics right now and I will be doing assessments to find out where each child is so I can help them where they need it. We are reviewing letters, sounds, and simple sentences. Our poetry program will allow us to develop fluency and expression and will come home on Fridays for practise. Soon we will find out what level each student is reading at and how to find a "just right" book. We will start journals where we focus on conventions and then Writer's Workshop where we "free write" and get our ideas flowing and use things like adjectives and determine our purpose for writing. Many great things to come!!
If you are wondering how you can support your child at home, please make sure they know their sight words (popcorn words) as this will help them begin to read if they are not already.
Over the next 2 + weeks, if you would like your child to practise language I would highly recommend doing "Writer's Workshop" at home. Our class REALLY loves this special time to just do creative writing and write books of whatever ideas come into their minds. During this time, we have our "offices", white paper that can be crafted into any kind of book (it doesn't need to have lines!) and we listen to classical music for 10 minutes. When the music stops, pictures can be added, work can be edited etc. but no talking or distractions during that 10 minutes. It's a great time for your child to watch you model it too and see you do some creative writing of your own :)
Social Studies: We have just started our unit on "People in the Community". In this unit we learn about how people and services in the community help meet our needs. It couldn't be more relevant right now with everything going on! If you want to have discussions at home you can talk about how the community would be different without certain services and people that do those jobs. Social studies is all about inquiry, asking questions and finding the answers. Our community has really leaned on one another in the past week and will continue to do so. It's a great time to talk about how a community works together and how relationships are interconnected.
The other unit we have left in Social Studies is mapping. Students will learn directional words, how to read a compass rose and determine the location of places/ things.
Learning Skills: We will complete a self assessment sometime in April/ May so you are aware of how your child see's themselves and their progress in grade 1. Everyone has come SO far since September, I am truly amazed.
Science: We are not currently working on Science (since we are working on Social Studies). The units we still have left to cover are "Living Things" and "Energy in Our Lives"
Please use the curriculum if you have any specific questions about what you can be working on at home. There are great prompting and example questions in the document under each specific expectation. As I mentioned on my extra practise page, instagram, Pinterest and teachers pay teachers have some great free resources and ideas if you can check there !!
